While working in special education, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach social skills and behavioral self-management through role playing (practicing) scenarios designed to challenge the issues each student was working on improving.

Teaching these skills, alerted me to the fact that most of us weren’t taught productive coping strategies, (at least not directly or necessarily productively.) Here is one that can help in a multitude of situations.

We have all come across people who are emotionally and mentally draining, people who thrive on conflict or drama, and people who are negative, highly critical, verbally abusive, always judging, and/or always complaining.

We don’t have to be drawn into their issues. We can maintain our self-control.

We can prevent getting drained, baited, having our buttons pushed or goaded into arguing.

You ARE allowed to protect your boundaries AND it can be done in a polite way. You only have to give yourself permission.

When Confronted With People Who  Disrupt Your Peace:

Take a deep breath in through the nose and slowly let it out while thinking “I will maintain my peace.”

Smile.

Then say one of the following:

  1. Good to know.
  2. I will consider that.
  3. Thank you for sharing.
  4. Let’s agree to disagree.
  5. I’ll take that under advisement.
  6. That’s an interesting perspective.
  7. You are entitled to your opinion and I am free to reject it.

(DO NOT use #7 with volatile people, as it may escalate behavior.)

You can use these in any combination, if that person persists.

You can practice in preparation for a meeting with someone that often goes this way!

Doing this will assure you maintain your center of peace and love. It may even bring them up to your high-frequency vibrational level, instead of letting them bring you down to theirs.

After you’ve practiced a few times, it should become a habit!
